The sad thing about this "love" scene is that it's a performance by two professionals trying to take their mind off the fact that their ability to have a normal relationship will be next to impossible without having to deal with their bosses as intermediaries. This was not an uncommon scenario among sex workers and adult entertainers, even less than a decade ago. Few people understand or have empathy for adult entertainers and sex worker, often seeing them as "tainted." The best recourse has often been to find a partner that you connect within the industry and hope for the best.

My husband, worked as a nude model and professional photoshoot bodyguard for lingerie and nude models. I worked in a variety of adult entertainment fields including sex work. We ended up together, in spite of us not actually being sexually compatible, (I'm queer and he's not,) because few people actually understood the weirdness of what we both experienced. Being involved in adult entertainment does weird things to you, that really are difficult to feel at ease with, unless you've been in the midst of that chaos. Loki and I are still married after two decades and still going strong and are still besties. Oh yeah, and both Loki and I worked to become clergy prior to our involvement in the industry, though he didn't become one, while I did. So perhaps, there will be a happy ending for these two. Part of Tsar's duties with his boss might make it possible for he and Getter to meet again. More on that in a few weeks.

Yeah, this whole thing strikes me less as romantic and more as uncomfortable. But that might just be me being a prude.

Still think they'd be good for each other, even if I prefer the idea of them being platonic friends.

You are reading it correctly... It is weird and uncomfortable. This is probably the last thing Tsar wanted, as he made it very clear earlier on, even if he understands why Getter is doing it.

From a cultural perspective, Tsar has been conditioned to accept offers of sex, whether he wants them to or not. In the Soviet prison culture of the 70's, men who were opushchennye (rape victims) were not allowed turn down anyone who prepositioned them. If they did, they would be subject to extremely violent punishment. For this reason, I doubt that Tsar even knows how to say "no" while still feeling safe. I also doubt that Getter actually knows how to have a relationship that isn't conditional on her ability to have sex. After all, she was a child when she first started her involvement in subsistence sex work and her home life wasn't conducive to fostering healthy relationships.

This has some parallels with my life and Loki's. It took several years into our marriage for Loki to realize that I was a talented automaton when it came to physical intimacy. Pretending to enjoy sex and people that disgusted me, was my job, (and my ex-husband's expectation as well,) regardless of how I actually felt. That's all I knew. He was very sad, and dare I say, traumatized, when he finally understood what was going on. It took us a lot of couples counselling to unpack that. Nowadays, our marriage is flirty, but sex really isn't a thing. He describes me as a roomie that he looks forward to waking up in the morning with, and the feeling is mutual.

This is why I wrote this scene: Sometimes you know that a relationship SHOULD be platonic, but neither party is healthy enough to realize it.

They were a pain in the butt, but I really enjoyed doing the research for them. There's a few interesting books on them.

I work in a tattoo studio and I have some of those books. I really love Russian prison tattoos the designs are so awesome and the history is interesting.

That's really wonderful. Two of my other comics, I Have Problems and Barxotka, also have quite a bit of Russian prison tattoos. I Have Problems (Tsar's backstory) in particular even goes into why some of the tattoos are there, but you need a strong stomach for that particular webcomic.
